About
Wahl-Coates Explorers is an after-school 4-H science club for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.
The students explore a variety of topics that cover science (biological and physical), engineering and technology.
Meetings
Meetings are held on select Thursdays during the academic calendar from 2:30-4p.
Typical meetings include demonstrations, experiments and outdoors activities related to physics, botany, ecology, earth science, chemistry, biology, geology. meteorology, etc.
4-H
Wahl-Coates Explorers is a registered 4-H club with the Pitt County Cooperative Extension. This partnership gives the group access to the science and technology kits and resources provided by 4-H and will give the students an avenue to compete with their projects. 4-H has a great slogan “Learning by doing” that will be the backbone of our science explorations!
Structure
Time is divided into 4 themes: 1) Presentations, 2) One-off activities, 3)Short projects and 4) Long projects
Presentations are given by guest speakers. Speakers are knowledgeable about a particular area of study.
One-off activities are completed in one meeting. The activities are designed to be “hands-on” to allow students to participate as “scientists,” discovering new and exciting aspects of the world of science for themselves.
Short projects are any activities that take club members two to three meetings to complete. Short projects allow for more investigation. Many of the 4-H projects fall under short projects.
Long projects are any activities that take club members half a term or more to complete. Completing a long project can be very rewarding. Our hope is to submit them to a local or regional competition.
Leadership
The club has student officers that include: President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.
Club co-sponsors are Mrs. Allison Wasklewicz, 4-H Club Leader and Ms. Lindsey Moore, WC 4th Grade Teacher.
