WC Explorers had a table at tonight's Book Fair Family Night Spaghetti Dinner to present their findings from monitoring Green Mill Run and to talk about stormwater. The club's President manned the table. He discussed the club's results, what are indicators of a healthy stream, how storm events are changing the morphology and composition of our streams, and just generally where water that comes out of your tap comes from. He also walked participants through an exercise to help explain what a watershed is and how pollutants migrate into our waterways. You can find the exercise on page 4 of Watershed Excursion Teacher's Guide published by the Southwest Florida Water Management District. We would like to thank all of the families and students that stopped by the table to investigate and explorer. There were many wonderful questions asked. It was great to see so many people interested in what students at Wahl-Coates were researching. There were discussions about where the water that flows out of our taps comes from, how volume and velocity changes of water in our streams impact not only the steam's ecosystem but city infrastructure, the differences in Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, and many more. Explorers will be presenting their findings and having hands on exercises through out the year at school wide events. Please stop by and ask the students your questions. You will both learn something from the experience.
